Responsible Travel Tips

Holidays are about enjoying yourself, but if you’d also like to make a few choices that are kinder to the environment and the communities you visit on your next trip, here are simple ideas that fit easily into most plans:

Use digital travel documents – many airlines, hotels, and tour operators now offer apps or digital tickets, and some airlines may not accept printed boarding passes. Keeping boarding passes, itineraries, and confirmations on your phone reduces paper waste and means less to carry. It’s also more convenient if plans change, as updates appear instantly in the app or email.

Cut down on single-use plastic – pack a reusable bag, bottle, or cup. Perfect for markets, day trips, or your morning coffee, and many cafés are happy to refill. Refuse plastic straws or cutlery. This helps reduce waste in the places you visit.

Support local businesses – try family-run restaurants, independent shops, and community-led tours. More of your spend stays in the destination and helps local jobs thrive. Supporting local economies keeps communities strong and authentic.

Be mindful with wildlife and animals – research experiences before booking and choose operators that follow recognised animal welfare and conservation standards. Always observe animals from a safe distance and avoid touching them, ensuring their wellbeing while allowing you to appreciate their natural behaviour.

Respect local culture – dress appropriately, learn a few local words, and follow customs. Avoid touching monuments or artworks, and don’t photograph locals or religious sites without permission. Respectful behaviour helps protect heritage and build positive connections with communities.

Be mindful with resources – take shorter showers, reuse towels, and switch off lights or air conditioning when you leave your room. Conserving water and energy supports local communities and the environment.

Choose how you get around – walking, cycling, or public transport is often cheaper, easier, and a great way to explore a place and meet local people. Using local transport reduces emissions and lets you experience the destination more authentically.

Travel a little slower – fewer destinations and longer stays mean less stress and a deeper connection with the places you visit. Slower travel gives you more meaningful experiences and lowers your environmental impact.

Tidy as you go – pick up stray wrappers or bottles and dispose of them properly. Small actions keep destinations clean and enjoyable for everyone.

You don’t have to do everything. Even one or two small changes can make a difference,  while you still enjoy a brilliant break.
